Welcome To Paul's iPad

by admin on February 22, 2010

Yes, I’m going to update this Blog to the template I use at PaulColligan.com (and everywhere else).  I just need to give the graphics guy a few days.

Here’s the deal.  I think the iPad is going to be huge.  I think the general population has it wrong.  So, I’m going to subject myself to a little experiment.  Here’s what I’m going to do:

  • I’ll buy an iPad the day it comes out. I have to put a small disclaimer here as there is a trip or two in my future and I can’t promise I’ll be able to get to an Apple store the day it launches.  Once we know for sure when the iPad launches, I can confirm this one.
  • I’ll run my business for 30 days on the iPad. I have to stress here that this is my business, my day job, the thing I do to pay the bills.  I’m not a hobbyist – I’m in this for real.  You can read more about me at PaulColligan.com.
  • I’ll report the results at this Blog. And, of course, I’ll do all the updating from the iPad.

Want to play along at home?  Here are your options:

  • Please comment away.  This Blog will be a conversation.
  • Follow PaulsiPad on Twitter.  How could I (and this project) not be on Twitter?   I’m also on Twitter personally as Colligan if you’d like to follow me there too.
  • Get updates by email.  That form on the right side of this blog should make that easy.
  • And, yes, we got RSS too.  If you know what that means, feel free to subscribe to http://feeds.podcastpartnership.net/paulsipad.

That’s it for now.  More news as it comes.

  • will be interested in how you do! I already have multiple ideas bouncing in my head...
  • paulcolligan
    as do i ;-)!
  • Will be interesting to see what we come up with! ;)
  • Simon I can definitely vouch for the iPhone as a business tool. I've even used it to update Wordpress websites whilst on the go and I don't mean just adding posts, I mean jumping into the code. When you add the social media capabilities, Task Management apps and ability to use Google Docs even just an iPhone can be a powerful solution, with the extra power of an iPad I expect you will be able to do even more. Only gripe pre-release is that it's still not Flash friendly.
  • paulcolligan
I hear this argument a lot - but don't really use flash a lot in my business - so I'm currently fine.
  • Great idea Paul - I'm looking forward to your experience and comments. I'm especially interested in what types of business tasks can effectively be handled with the iPad.
  • paulcolligan
Sort of the goal here ;-)
  • I have been very tempted to buy an iPhone but haven't yet been able to justify the cost so naturally I'm very interested to hear how the iPad experiment works out for you. It could very well become my next take with me "laptop".

My current equipment is a Fujitsu Siemens laptop and an old Nokia mobile phone, both gets the job done.
  • Hey Paul,

This is sure to be an interesting experiment and I will definitely be following your story for forthcoming iPad Review blog. Can I ask do you plan on doing everything on the iPad or outsourcing some tasks that perhaps might not be accomplished with it i.e. video edits etc?

P.S. I've subscribed to your list for this ;)
  • paulcolligan
Great question. Part of my business is in outsourcing tasks - so I don't see anything changing there. But, yeah, won't be doing any complicated edits during those 30 days. Note, I didn't say "any editing."
  • This is awesome, Paul - subscribing as soon as I finish this comment! My father and I completely agree with you - we are both very excited about the iPad! This will be an interesting experiment, indeed!
  • paulcolligan
So, why are you excited? What exactly "does it" for you with the product versus others?
  • Ha! Disqus had a little 'burp'! When I clicked on 'Link to comment' in my email, it sent me here first: http://www.mycharmingkids.net/ I was really confused for a second there! Then when I clicked it again, it did the right thing - how weird is that!

Ok, I think the biggest thing for me is thinking of the simplicity of carrying it around and using it at conferences. At this time, I carry a Lenovo Thinkpad T61. Love, love, love this machine - but, it's just not exactly conference-friendly. Well, a lot of it is my laptop bag - but, it's still a big, heavy laptop.

I also agree with what Steve Jobs said about it's being a totally new concept of tech. So many people railed on about 'oh it's just a big iPhone', when - in reality, it is a totally new 'contraption'. You can't really compare it to anything else!
