A Whole Bunch Of New iPad Facts Are Coming In …

by Paul Colligan on March 12, 2010

In the dawn of this glorious iPad Pre-order morning, we’re getting some fun news about the iPad worth looking at. We’ll add these thing to our iPad Tablet page.

MacRumors tells us that the 3g service option (if you buy that iPad) is managed through the iPad interface and will require that we cancel (with no penalties) when we don’t need the plan. But, very cool, if you only do the 250meg thing, you’ll have an option to get pinged when you reach certain limits. Very nice – and unexpected from AT&T.

Also from MacRumors are some details about the iBooks program/process. The first point is this – Apple has a new page at the site dedicated to the iBooks program. Included in that page are the following deets: iBooks will use the ePub Standard and you’ll be able to sync ePub books purchased somewhere else through iTunes. Still no specifics on the DRMd copies – but everyone is assuming Fairplay will be used. Fair enough. Throw in a (maybe obvious) orientation option of single page or landscape and we have a reader that is becoming more and more usable.

And, finally from 9to5 Mac, we have the announcement that the “mute” button (sorry guys, no hidden last minute phone) is actually a screen rotation lock switch. Also makes sense – and no big surprise.

Anything in this list sway you either way?

If Apple is trying to have this compete with the other e-readers available I think they have missed the mark! Do they really expect us to purchase AT&T at home for internet, AT&T plan for our iPhone and another AT&T plan for the iPad when the leaders Nook, Sony AND Kindle all have it bundled? I think not!

I'm just not sure why the iPad exists. I mean, what does it do so magnificently better than other devices available that I want to purchase it? I think for now I'll be waiting for generation two when they figure out what market the iPad is really trying to fulfill.

    Blessings,
    Wendy

Wendy, I'd really watch the first 20 minutes of the speech from Jobs when they launched the thing on why they launched the thing. It's all at the http://www.youtube.com/user/paulsipad channel for easy access. He didn't build it to be a competitor to any one specific product, he built it to be the thing that comes between the big desktop and the smart phone.

I'm typing this response on a $2500 laptop – because it would just take too long on the $199 phone. There needs to be something in the middle. This is it.

Well, I guess I'll just have to look forward to you showing me how awesome it is in San Diego in May at Ed Dale's Homecoming. I look forward to seeing you there!

P.S. I hardly ever type on my iPhone. I use the Dragon dictation app and save myself the finger ache and frustration.

    Blessings,
    Wendy
