Today A Webinar

by Paul Colligan on April 15, 2010

Part of the business that I’m running from my iPad for the next 30 days requires that I do webinars.

Today I owe my Inner Circle Group a 2 hourish webinar. I’ve been trying to make some of the webinar options for the iPad out there out there do my bidding and, well, no dice.

It’s not a question of them not being good programs. It’s an issue of they don’t do what I need them to do. Part of this is the very nature of the iPad (how do I both broadcast a webinar and show you my browser screen in a device that doesn’t multitask?). Part of it is that I’m used to doing things certain way.

So today, I’ll be running a webinar from my iPad – but I’ll be using iTap VNC to manage/run my iMac remotely – which will be running the webinar software, the screen recording software and the tools I’m teaching during the webinar.

Gonna do it. Have to do it. I’ll leave this question to you.

Does that mean I’m “cheating?”

No your not cheating at all. The experiment of using your IPAD for 30 days is very cool, but its not worth risking the strength of your business for. Sometimes you just have to do what you have to do.

Well, as long as you use the ipad as your interface, you're using it. You're actually just using resources it offers. If you can't use VNC, then you may as well say you can't use google analytics because a massive computer (or several servers) is needed to do all the work to give you those results. So bottom line is if one of your resources is VNC -an approved ipad app, then so be it.

Hope that makes you feel better? ;)

Not cheating – if you can do it on the iPad its Kosher .

You're remotely controlling your iMac via your iPad, right? That's not cheating. In fact, I think it's a testament to the potential power of the iPad! But you already knew that didncha? … You just want others (like me) to notice it first, right? ;)

You're awesome Paul, and please tell Ed that GanderCo said hi to him as well.

I don't believe it to be far off the mark to say the majority of iPad users are using a smart phone of one breed or another. Thus, if you have to occasionally pull out your iPhone to run a secondary app, I say more power to you and grats on getting around the lack of multitasking.

    Yup!

  • paulcolligan

That was never an issue – but i thought it was a fun question.

  • paulcolligan

Exactly. Most of my life is in the cloud so this is just a virtual cloud at home.

  • paulcolligan

    Thanks

  • paulcolligan

Yeah, I knew that – but i thought the dialogue would be fun.

  • paulcolligan

    I like the spin.

  • paulcolligan

Then I'll give you your money back :-)

Since you set the rules for the 30 day experiment, I guess you get to decide whether it's “cheating” :-)

Glad to see you're being flexible.

If iTap doesn't tick all the right boxes for you, GuruBob, Eugene Ware and I have been using iTeleport (previously named Jaadu) on the iPhone for well over a year to great effect, and the iPad version is even better. It's more expensive but works brilliantly.

And no, it's not cheating at all. If I'm sitting in a pub updating a website, using my Mac that's sitting at home via the iPad, then that's not cheating because I'm still getting that mobile freedom.

  • paulcolligan

    No other choice ;-)

  • paulcolligan

Heard good things about iTeleport. I'll take a look.

So how did the webinar go? An update would be greatly appreciated Paul.

Nope, not cheating! It's another c-word that has to be applied here: creative. Your are being creative in using the device in a way that circumvents some of its limitations.

  • paulcolligan

Went fine. A bit slow for me but fine. Will do a follow up article.

  • paulcolligan

    Thanks. Ill take it.
